Walmart launched its confidential self-identification platform for people with disabilities and members of the LGBTQ community in August 2018. Walmart is not a federal contractor and thus not under compliance mandates to report on the percentage of its workforce that is comprised of people with disabilities. Based upon anecdotal evidence, Walmart was among the first non-federal contractors to launch a self ID initiative. Providing associates with a voluntary option to confidentially self-identify is part of Walmart’s commitment to diversity and inclusion. For some, an inclusive environment means one where you have the option to be counted as a member of a particular group, such as a person with a disability and/or a member of the LGBTQ community. Their self ID campaign has been promoted internally through communication campaigns at launch and during National Disability Employment Awareness Month and has featured a series of videos of associates with disabilities sharing their personal stories about Walmart’s inclusive and supportive culture.
