With leadership experience in disability, accessibility, universal design, program management, and linguistic and culturally appropriate services with the Deaf community, Marthalee brings a unique and comprehensive perspective from 30 years in the corporate, rehabilitation, and non-profit worlds. Most recently Marthalee led access and disability at Starbucks Coffee Company culminating in the Global Accessibility Office focused on strategic planning for access and inclusion initiatives, universal design and accommodations. During her sixteen years at Starbucks, the Braille Gift cards and Braille/Large Print menus were launched, customer service training and a centralized accommodation process were initiated, a centralized accommodation budget, standards for service animals and web accessibility and the Interpreter Services department were created. Most recent efforts included the launch of the first Starbucks Signing Store in the U.S. with subsequent stores in China and Japan, along with the original Starbucks Malaysia Signing Store.
Marthalee previously served on the Disability:IN Board of Directors and collaborated in the creation and pilot of the Disability Equality Index. She also served on the Board of the Northwest ADA Center and worked with Deafblind people to establish a Deafblind Service Center in Washington state, the first in the nation. She is currently a member of the Washington State Deaf-Blind Citizens and the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf and is nationally certified as an American Sign Language interpreter.
