About Zaylore Stout of Zaylore Stout & Associates LLC
Why did you become an entrepreneur?
I became an entrepreneur because I wanted to have the ability to meld my professional life with my advocacy work. My mere existence is a political statement. There was a point, not too long ago, in our country’s history where I might have been relegated into an institution because of my disability. Our founding fathers never intended for a Black man to have the same and equal opportunity to success as the pilgrims. As a member of the LGBTQ+ community, having the ability to model living and working as my true and authentic self gives those who are younger the audacity to know that this is a life that is also available to them no matter what messages they hear from their family, community, political figures, or faith communities. Being an entrepreneur allows me to be a Black, disabled, queer attorney all day every day without fear of compromise.
How has being a certified DOBE helped your company grow and achieve success?
Every single public sector client that we have a master contract with has found value in our DOBE certification particularly when claims of disability discrimination are filed with their human resource departments. It provides instant credibility to the employer who is viewed as having sought out a neutral third party who knows the challenges of living and working while having a disability. It also instantly puts the employee at ease since they will automatically know that we have a shared lived experience of navigating a world designed for the able-bodied. It’s a win-win for everyone involved and has resulted in significant growth in our workplace investigation work.
