Techniques, tips, and how-to apply for and secure employment

  • Being present at this event is a huge first step in putting yourself out there to network and meet more people (& to learn where you might be the best fit)
    • Take action: connect on LinkedIn and introduce yourself to the presenters or company representatives you are meeting with during the career fairs/conference
    • Ask to schedule follow up informational interviews to learn more about the company and various opportunities (be strategic with the types of opportunities you are applying for)
    • Find a connection: utilize your alumni network, a past colleague, family friend, etc., to learn about the company and/or get a potential referral
  • Your resume and cover letter are often the first thing companies see, are they both professionally written and are they tailored to the type of job you are seeking
    • Have a recruiter or someone who understands how to write a resume look over your personal resume and provide constructive feedback (you might have a few custom resumes)
  • Preparation is key: knowing how to interview by practicing interviewing will make you feel more confident and allow you to put your best foot forward
    • Participate in mock interviews; practice receiving the question and thinking about it before immediately answering. No interview is a waste, it’s all practice for the right role
    • Do research on the company you are applying for and be able to talk about how your skills/strengths relate to the job
    • Be able to speak to the WHY. Why do you want to work at that specific company? Recruiters know you are applying to many jobs but want to know that you are purposefully engaged with them
    • Following up (after interview) with a personalized note to your recruiter and/or interviewer will go a long way in standing out (find ways to make people want to go the extra mile for you)
    • When you secure an interview: find a quiet space with no distractions, know what company you are speaking to, be punctual, and have prepared questions
  • Find opportunities to expand your skills (volunteer opportunities are a great way to do this)
    • Online courses or trainings (extracurricular efforts show hiring managers that you are willing to go the extra mile and that you are continuously learning)
  • The journey varies but is in many ways, similar for everyone looking for employment
    • Don’t be discouraged!
    • Be persistent in your pursuit of intentional opportunities: intentional to your interest, skills and career aspirations
    • Try not to put all of your eggs in one basket and do not take it personal if you receive a decline – that’s a natural and necessary part of the process
