Anthem’s Lex Frieden Internship at Anthem is intentionally designed to increase disability competency and foster an inclusive culture. The Lex Frieden internship offers paid opportunities to undergraduate and graduate students with disabilities through on-the-job training, application and activities that personally and professionally stimulate growth and development. Each intern is paired with a mentor, participates in developmental learning sessions, and gains a better understanding of how to navigate corporate structure as early careerists. The curriculum includes components specifically tailored for the internship, as well as universal elements that emphasize personal branding, career planning, and soft-skill development, and has been replicated in other internship programs across the company. A recent Lex Frieden intern completed their internship on Anthem’s Federal Affairs Disability Policy Engagement team in Washington, D.C. and was then hired as a policy analyst with HealthCore, Anthem’s outcomes research subsidiary. They cited, “I value this as not just an opportunity for people with disabilities, but as an opportunity for people in Anthem offices to learn more about people with disabilities and to allow people with disabilities to be part of the team and to do tasks they like.
