Originally started in 1970 as “Autism Awareness Month,” the Autism community continuously calls for more than just ‘awareness’ but for public acceptance and celebration. Disability:IN views disability as a strength and we’re proud to offer a few key resources to our network related to autism.
Did You Know? Autism Statistics
- About 1 percent of the world population has autism. (CDC, 2014)
- As of 2018, eighty-five percent of college graduates affected by autism were unemployed (Market Watch, 2019)
- Although boys are four times more likely than girls to be diagnosed with autism (CDC, 2020). It is common for women to be diagnosed later in life. (What Women With Autism Want You To Know)
- Autism greatly varies from person to person. No two people with autism are alike!
Resources to Help Celebrate Autism Acceptance Month
- RESOURCE: Our Inclusion Works Program has developed a “Framework for Neurodiversity at Work Pilots”. This is an overview of a four-step framework covering Internal Planning, Scope and Employment Modeling, Internal Training, and Recruiting and Sourcing Talent for a more neurodiverse workforce.
- NETWORK: Neurodiversity @ Work Employer Roundtable: Founded in 2017, the Neurodiversity @ Work Employer Roundtable is a collection of employers committed to neurodiversity-focused hiring initiatives. The Roundtable is about building a community of employers that work together to create understanding, awareness and supportive systems that provide opportunities for neurodivergent employees to grow and achieve their full potential.
- WEBINAR [Disability:IN Partners Only]: “Webinar: Neurodiversity in the Workplace” April 6th, 2022 12:00-1:00pm EDT. In honor of World Autism Awareness Day, join this webinar to learn how to support, lead, and retain neurodivergent employees. Hear from companies who are prioritizing neurodivergent individuals as part of their hiring processes and who have programs in place to support these peers in the workplace. Remember to Add Alt-Text!
When posting to social, please remember to provide an alt-description for any images:
- Twitter: Once an image is uploaded there is an option to “Add description.” Click this and a window will expand to describe the photo.
- Facebook: Once an image is uploaded there is an option to “Edit photo.” Click this and a window will expand with a few options on the left sidebar. Click the “Alternative text” option at the very bottom of the sidebar. Click this to add an alt-text and click save before exiting.
- LinkedIn: Once an image is uploaded there is an option that pops up, top right corner of the image, to “Add alt text.” Click this and a window will expand for an area to add text describing what the photo is. Click save before exiting the window. For editing an image that has been uploaded, there is an option that pops up, top right corner of the image click on the 3 dots, then click on “edit post” and then “Add alt text.” Click this and a window will expand for an area to add text describing what the photo is. Click save before exiting the window.
- Instagram: Once an image has been uploaded and the messaging has been added for the post, there is an option at the very bottom of the screen for “Advanced Settings” under “New Post.” Click this and a window will expand with an option at the very bottom of the screen to “Write Alt Text.” Click this and another window will expand to add a description.
